I have been out of the hobby for twenty yrs. My first tank was 135 fish and reef. I just happened to go vist Paccaso Fish on sat when the meet and greet was going on. After talking to some peeps who were all very helpful and recieved the green light from the wife have jumped back in.

Ok lots to learn again but so far this is what I have done. Today I purchased the contents of nice 46 gallon reef tank. Its been up for seven yrs, owner is moving. Im getting 40-50 pounds of live Fujia rock some corals, 5-6 fish..... He is holding it all untill my tank comes.

I am purchasing a Red Sea Max 65 gallon setup. Its pricy but the wife loved it and is allowing me to set it up in a prim spot downstairs instead in my 4th bedroom. The Red Sea tanks come all in one scimmer filter lights cabnet.

I am hoping the tank will be here at end of week. So what do I need to do to be ready ?

I will be using the purchased sand bed and live rock but I know I need more. Should I use his water ? When I do buy more rock ? I wanted to buy cured to cut down on cycle. Do I have to wait or can it be added with the old live rock from his tank ?

    Welcome to 3reef.

Congrats on the new tank and getting back in.

I would sure buy new sand for the tank and not even consider using the old sand. Since the tank has been up for 7 years there is sure to be some nasties in that sand bed. The live rock you are getting will be a much better why to seed the tank.

If you can I would just get some cured live rock or some dry base rock and cycle it with the new tank, as soon as you set it up.

Personally I would not use the older tanks water and just make up your own, water carries very little beneficial bacteria. As long as you keep the rocks from the other tank wet, those rocks will be the biggest contributor to your biological filter.

    Good luck
