You can toss some carbon in to help with the smell. A good quality carbon will take care of it in no time.

I'm going to piggyback and ask a couple questions of my own:

    1) Should I run my skimmer and powerheads during the cycle?

    2) Should I perform any water changes during the cycle?

No water changes, and no skimmer during the cycle. Its alright to run powerheads and such.

I would keep it in there until you start to get some ammonia building up. They you should be able to remove it with no problems.

No skimmer during the cycle and no water changes as well. The powerhead is fine to use. If you do a water change during the cycle, you will only prolong it. ;D
