I do agree with most people here. However, I recently started my tank as well after I moved and I bought live rock from an established tank, around 50 lbs and put it straight in my tank. It probably took around 40 minutes to transport it from the private seller's tank to my tank. The next day, I bought 10 more lbs of live rock from my Big Al's (not cured). I checked my water levels after three days and there was no sign of ammonia and nitrites. And nitrates were less then 20 ppm. I spoke to a couple of experienced reefers about this to make to know if I should be concernd or not because of no ammonia spike since its a new tank and it should get cycled. Everyone said that since I got live rock from the established tank with little to no die off, they are neutralizing all the ammonia/nitrites that are being produced in the tank, even from the new 10 lbs of live rock which was not from an established tank. The established rock I bough had mushroom and other hithhikers on it and they are all doing fine. No die off that I can notice after 2 weeks. Still as a caution, I am going to to wait out a month since I started the tnak before I buy any invertebrates and fish. Hope this helps!

I am a big fan of base rock. You start with rock with nothing on it so you 100% know what is going in your tank. It may take a LONG time to cycle and grow, but that's part of the hobby. With base rock you'll always know that you don't have any unwanted growths in your tank. Just my 2 cents.

I took everyone's advise; bought 44 lbs of LS, and from LFS 33 lbs of LR. Here's a pic of the tank set up; going on day 5 of set up. I also discovered on two of my rocks there are a bunch of feather dusters. :)
