    If your tank has been sitting with stagnant water, I would get some new sand, and have it be the small grainy sand like argonite sand. Crushed coral often limits what you can have in your tank, for example some sifting creatures as well as things that like to bury down deep in your tank. And the key to keeping your sand clean is to keep some flow across it, have some sand sifting creatures like snails as well as things that move across it.
