I've acquired a 55 gallon steel drum. It has a lid.

I intend to use this to burn stuff ("burn barrel"). But I can not get this stupid lid off. I've never messed with one of these before that didn't already have the lid off.

How do I get this off? Do I have to cut it off? Is it crimped on? Should I be using a crowbar/hammer and trying to knock the lid "up"/ off from under the lip?

    it's driving me nuts

    thanks to anyone that knows

+superduperthousandsomethingPkarma for the idea that works for me first! (I'll be trying again this weekend)

Yeah, you gotta use a heavy chisel with a ball-peen hammer. A coupla wedges would help too. The lids are "sealed" kinda tight but if they've been opened, you gotta "pop" the top loose. otherwise, get out the cutting torch.

    Good Luck!

youre gonna have to cut it or chisel it off, unless you have one of the fancy de-heading tools laying around

If it was used for petroleum products or any flammable really, make sure you remove the plug from the bung. This will keep you in one piece if any fumes ignite from sparks or torch flame. ;)
