i think this is the most fun idea. :) but if its seal with clips that are crimp3ed on. might be able to peel them back. but if youve got a cordless reciprocating saw . that might be the easiest way since its in the bush. just trying to help, as stepho was. :D

Steel drums make me want to drink a lot of rum.

ugh, wrong type of steel drums. ;)

For my 55g burn barrel I simply used a sawzall and cut the top off leaving the upper lip on.

Make sure and cut some ventilation holes on the sides. That was more fun than sawzalling the top off.

LOL, gotta love some of these answers....especially the gun one!

Peredill, what ever you do do not use a cutting torch on it or a sawzall on it if it smells at all like petroleum products even the slightest bit, don't do anything till you rinse it out good. Even using a sawzall can create a spark which can ignite the fumes inside and the next time we hear about you will be your obit in the papers!

And a cutting torch can burn the paint on the inside and create a flammable fume that will all of a sudden ignite, which will most likely scare the he77 out of you and bend the sh1t out of the drum, I have seen it happen several times

If its a "closed" or "tight head" Barrel like the one below you first drill a hole in the top at the edge big enough to get a Sawzall Metal blade in there and then just cut along the edge all the way around.

I leave about a 1/4" of steel along the edge and then take a 3lb sledge on one side and a Ball pean hammer and pound it flat that way you don't have that sharp cut edge, you can also grind it down if you have a grinder.

Some people cut under the top lip and cut the top off that way but the my way even thought it might take a bit more time leaves that nice rounded edge on top not a sharp cut your hand off edge.

and just so you know this is what is they mean by clamp, some barrels have clamps on them that you just loosen and off it comes, which yours does not have I am sure.

thanks for the input folks, appreciate it. Thanks for explaining things gazog.

My barrel is the first pic like you described. It does not have one of those clamps, thanks for clearing that up for me!

I'll be trying these ideas this weekend. I'll update Monday (if I'm still on solid ground! ;D
