Same here,I just adjusted the overflow to get my DT level where I wanted it and then fill both boxes of the overflow and start the siphon. You can then add water to your DT until it fills tour sump to about the level that you want in it and fire it up.You will probably have to add a little more when all the air is pumped out of the system.Just get your flow adjusted so your levels are staying constant and then add or remove water to get your level in your return section where you want it.

Forgot to mention that you need to be sure you have a siphon break in your return so that when you turn the power off it doesn't back siphon to the point of overflowing your sump, and of course don't overfill the sump to begin with so that with power off it will hold what drains back from the lines.

Thanks. Do I need to fill the sump up with water to cover the pump before I start the siphon?

Your sump and DT should levels should stay pretty constant.
Like SG said, fill to the top of the baffles, start the siphon, then start the return pump.

If the siphon ever is overwhelmed by volume, or the siphon in the overflow stops, your chamber in the sump will empty into the DT. If it can't handle that volume, it's going on the floor of wherever the DT is.

I have a High water level detector on my sywtem that shuts down my retrun pump BEFORE the DT overflows, etc.
However, with most store bought sumps, the return pump chamber is a smaller volume, so if you have your DT level low enough, it can still handle that volume when the return from to the sump is slowed or stops. At that point it will suck air and may burn up the pump, which I still think is better than a wet floor.

The way I did it was to start the siphon first then add water to the display and let overflow down to the sump till the sump was full enough that the level in the return section was about where I wanted it .I then turned the pump on and added more water (after all the air was purged out) till the level in the return section looked good.To start the siphon you just need water in both boxes of the overflow, you can have some in the sump but it doesn't really matter. If both ends of the u-tube remain underwater and you suck the air out of the u-tube (with airline tubing)you have your siphon. At this point if water is added to the DT till it spills into the overflow it will drain down.
