Well it does depend on the mineral amounts as well. It is most likely some form of distilled water and you then need to make sure the copper levels are not too high. I use distilled water for my top-offs.

What does that mean? Used in hospitals for what?

Dialysis machines use RO/DI water. Are you referring to water used for surgical means?

The term "sterile" means free from living germs, or aseptic. If you're asking if this water is suitable for reef tanks, then yes. It's the water created by RO/DI systems.

Hospitals almost always use medical grade stainless steel stills for water used in surgery and treatment. Sometimes they use other exotic alloys, but no reactive metals should be used in the process.

Analytical labs, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and other very tight tolerance applications use glass distilled water. In glass stills there aren't even trace levels of anything but pure H2O. In my college chem class we used glass distilled water all the time, they made it on site.

I would think a hospital still would put out water cleaner than an RO/DI unit. You should test for copper before adding it tho, as there's no telling what MIGHT be lurking.
