I just put rocks and water in my tank, but the guy at the LFS suggested not adding a fish, and thought that die off from the live rock would provide enough ammonia to feed the cycle. I bought 10 pounds of rock that had been curing at the shop for 2 weeks, and 60 pounds of rock from a fellow who was taking down his tank. Should I throw a damsel in there to ensure that the tank goes through the cycle? Or should I wait a few days and see if I get an ammonia spike from the rock?

Just wait on rock...that should do it.

If you don't see Ammonia rise after day or so, throw in piece of shrimp.

    Cycling hard on any fish.

All else fails, a damsel will do it.

    Good Luck!

Cool, thanks. I'll start a new thread and post some pics as soon as the water clears.
