Aquatic Critter has a "Ray tank" They have like 10 or so in there. Ask them if they are reef safe or not. Aquatic Critter Freshwater, Saltwater, Reef Fish & Reptiles

I personally have never had one because they will EAT crustaceans such as shrimp, crabs including hermit crabs. All the reef cleaners is what they eat basically. Which makes them not reef safe.

To me "reef safe" means that the animal is a threat to sessile "reef" inverts like corals and anemones. I guess I think this way because I know that alot of the fish that we consider to be "reef safe" are cabable of eating shrimp, crabs, fish, etc., i.e., hawkfish, some wrasses, dwarf angelfish, etc.

Soooo, that being said, if your friend doesn't mind losing his crabs and shrimp and maybe some fish, and as long as the ray has adequate food and room to move, I don't see why he would have any problems. I don't think a tank chocked full of live rock with little room for sand is a proper environment for it though. We've all seen how they swim in the wild so you kinda have to make certain modifications to your setup to support it.

Also need a tight fitting lid, not for the ray, but for the fish it tries to eat, lol...

AC is one of the best stores for fish, they have a huge variety, fresh and salt and everything inbetween. They also carry the freshwater rays. Eh, they also have caymans too, lol. When you walk in the front door on the reptile side, if you never been there before, ya get a lil bit of shock cause the croc tank is right by the door as you walk in.

Sweeeet! He has plenty of room because he doesn't have it crowded with LR and the hole front of the tank is open for him. He has no shrimp...(which my golby ate mine so I guess he is not reef safe....);D I think as long as he is fed and is not hungry all the time he should be a good friend for a while.

Another thing that I forgot to mention is that you're going to need a heck of alot of oxygen to keep the ray alive. An oxygen reactor should be on your friend's shopping list. Definitely have your friend visit some of the forums dedicated to keeping these animal so that he knows what to expect. :)

Ouch! He keep a closed top on the tank so that won't help much with gas exchange. Thanks I will let him know!

The one I call Ray Ray at the shop in Richmond has never came out of his coral growing tub and will come up to the sides if you look like you will feed him :) He was in a tank at a public place we leased to and he and the shark had a disagreement one Saturday night about 10:00 PM LOL blood and meat everywhere and the people where all in a panic LOL so Ray Ray had to leave town by midnight.

But in that tank we bubbled in a oxygen enriched air mixture like one uses CO'2 they need lots or Dissolved O'2 I think there where a few Pics of old Ray Ray posted here a while back. He or another one we had ever came out of the tank not to say they all won't try ?
