Stinky snail!

Just had a large turbo snail die. I wasn't sure and left him to be in a corner of the tank for a couple of days to confirm. I realized today that he was indeed dead when I saw white fuzz/slime around the base. I went to scoop it out and the insides started to come out of the shell a little and when I vrought it out of the water did it ever STINK! WOW!!!!

 

You can always tell when they are dead by using the good ole' smell test!

 

yup snails are horrid when they die. I had a huge apple snail die on me in a FW tank a long time ago and holy hell it stunk when I fished him out. I couldn't get the stink off my hand for a couple days atleast...I scrubbed and sanitized and scrubbed some more, but the stink wouldn't go away.

It still haunts me to this day *shiver*

snail death stinks! Inwall can tell you what 200 dead large turbo snails smells like! The night before the store got a shipment late (he didnt work that night) and the people were tired and just dumped all of them into one big tank. Well they didnt bother to make sure that the snails had not fallen upside down and left. The next day Curt comes in to open the store and it was horrid! Poor guy had to dig over 1/2 of those snails out of the tank! The store smelled for days.

 

I had a turbo that managed to get himself wedged and stuck nearly out of the water. I walked past the tank one morning and nearly gagged. Then as I pried that bit of nastiness out of the spot it was stuck in, the meat fell out of the shell into the water. Gross,gross,gross!

 

Yeah, it smells like rotten teeth x one million. I microwaved a dead snail once in an attempt to dehydrate it. People were gagging for blocks and couldn't figure out what the smell was, and even after I cleaned out the microwave with bleach and aired out the house, my wife was gagging when she came home a few hours later (and I couldn't even smell it by then). I don't know of anything that smells worse.


Don
