well the the metric converter i use states that 260litres in uk is 57 gallons
but in the u.s its 70 gallons.
so does that mean if i have a 260 litre tank in the uk and someone has a 260 litre tank in the u.s they can have more fish than me??

so when it comes to stocking with fish whats best to go by??

Fom my experience it depends on what site you use to give info on fish. I use UK books so I go by the UK gallon but if the info is in us gallons then go by that with your tank...

I live in Europe (Spain and Germany) as well and have to work with my lfs which sometimes takes forever. My tank is 110g and has been cycling for about 7 months now.
Just use the metric converter on google and you got your answer.
I would really take my time stocking the tank. First let it cycle for about at least a month. I just went the safe route and waited longer. When it comes to stocking it, you have to give us the info about your skimmer and equipment and whether you want a reef tank or not....

A US gallon is only 4 litres
A UK gallon is 4.5 litres

if your on a US web site then the information they give will be for US tanks - so if they say ( fish A needs tanks 75 gallons or larger) they mean US gallons which is 75 x 4 - 300 litres

which converts into UK gallons as follows 300 litres divided by 4.5 = 66.7 ish gallons

the amount of fish that can be supported does not depend on tank location at all
