I have almost 200 snails of, I think, six different species in my 55g. I don't experience die-off and my tank stays pretty spotless.

You might at first think it's too many and worry about them getting enough food... don't worry about that, they will be fine.

my diamond goby was a great addition to my tank. I have sand as well and he does a great job of keeping the top layer clean.

 

have you thought of a sixline wrasse? im not sure but they may go after crustaceans
