i've just read a few threads by members here that bother me alittle and was curious to know if others feel the same? one in paticular was coldmarineguys tank. I don't know why people feel the need to go into the ocean and take things out of a reef to put into their home tank. I think it's wrong and should be punishible by law. Everyone thinks nothing of it and lots of people do it. The only problem is those people like keeping the stuff but don't respect where it comes from.

more and more reefs around the world are being destroyed and we got dumb people who act like they care but don't do anything to stop it. I'm sure this is going to start up some arguments so i got many other reason for stating this. I'd hope that other members will understand what im saying. There are lots of businesses that may sell good products but have any of you researched the companies to see if they are in the fight to keep reefs or part of their destruction??? I dont have LR from a reef i made mine. All my fish are tank bread, and all my corals are frags.

If anyone would like more info on businesses that destroy reefs i can provide it. legal documents from the goverment stating the companies and the crimes they commited and are still commiting. I would like there to be a coral reef for my kids to see some day so take some responsibility and do some research.

i got a list about the length of my arm of companies that do more harm than good. I only do business with reputable businesses that put something back into the reefs. A small local comany here (prices way higher than SWC) yearly donates $25,000 to an organization that targets reefs in need of cleaning due to humans. one of the owners kids actually takes part in the cleaning and brings awesome before and after pictures. I just bought from them a coral beauty today. It was tank bread and $5 more than other places but i'd rather my money go there than to help some jack@$$ illegaly cultivate the reef

I'm not going to argue with you that we shouldn't be taking things from the reefs but where do you think all of the fish and corals that started the tank breds came from. The original fish had to come from the ocean. I personally only like to get tank bred as well. But IMO you have to take a small amount from the reef before you can better understand the creature and be able to breed your own. So in that sense, I think it's ok to take something from the reefs as long as it's to better help the tank bred business and not as a company's source of livestock.

. If you want to save the worlds coral reefs, then you need to kill about 4.5 billion people. Don't eat any food that was grown using fertilizer, and forget sugar from florida. I see the crap in the Gulf of Mexico from nutrient spikes.
Harvesting certain things from certain areas is not a problem, and yes pristine areas should be left alone and ethical harvesting practices used. When you make your living on a coral reef like I do, you understand just what can come out and what should stay in the sea. I would never harvest corals from our reef, but there are loads of other animals that are bountiful and legal.
Do you have any idea how much life and death occur everyday on a reef? Fish get eaten left and right, and there's reproduction left and right. Taking a few won't harm anything.
And why the hell did Canada just side with Japan against the Blue Fin Tuna Ban, the UN almost passed it.:angry::angry:

I believe it is an ineveitable part of this hobby. I agree with whiskytango to an extent because I too have seen natural reefs. There is so much going on that it would be incredibly hard to just take everything from a reef. But I believe if coral is being taken it should be fragged while still in the ocean and most of the mother colony left to grow. What people do to the ocean is unspeakable, but it is not going to change much. If we were to open our mouths about this subject we are called hippies and barely even acknowledged. Its a touchy subject, but the best way to avoid taking things from nature is to continue to frag and breed things. All of my corals are aquacultured or ORA and all of my fish are tank bred....
    Dont get too hostile guys...
