Stockman Standpipe

HA...thing is I cook all the meals already...foiled again...

I'm starting to think about ways to stop the return pump from vibrating against the glass of the sump. Will putting some vinyl tubing under it help?

Random note: as I'm sitting here typing, all 3 of my reef fish are staring at me from the end of the tank next to the desk...funny stuff...

Try sitting a spare piece of acrylic under the pump with some silicone on it to see if it will deaden any noise.
The fish must be wanting to learn how to type...;D

 

I've used foamy mouse pads before. That or the like works well.

 

Even with a submerged pump? The foam pads don't cause issues?

 

Yikes. I didn't catch that. No I was talking about external pumps. Sorry! I had no idea about those pads underwater, but I would think they would degrade.

Stick with your idea of airline tubing or lengths of 3/4" hose or the like.

Post some pics when you have your stockman going. I'd like to see that too!

 

With my mag 18 it came with some sticky foam to put on the bottom of the pump. I wouldent think they would supply a submerged pump with something that would degrade or deteriorate. I could be wrong though.

It's done...well, it's together at least...

The whole part of the mod that confused and concerned me was the cutting of the reducer so the standpipe will slide thru it. It took me a while to figure out what the hell that meant and then I worried about how I'd get it done. I tried (in the Depot parking lot) to cut the bottom off w/ my pvc cutter (never leave home w/o it) but suceeded in only removing a good-sized chunk from my thumb (note to self: them cutters is sharp). I got home and asked a handy buddy for a saw of some sort to cut it with and he suggested something MUCH SIMPLER (and safer)...remember boy scouts, lads? Remember your whittling chip? JUST WHITTLE THE DAMN THING! It worked great. Just a few minutes with my pocket knife and the pesky inner lip was history.
Now I just have to figure out how much pipe to leave on the thing...ie how high should the entry holes be?
Since I STILL haven't figured out how to insert pics in my actual post I'm going to have 3 separate posts with the pics and their descriptions. With any luck this will some day help someone else put one of these things together...

 

First pic: The dang reducers. The Depot near me didn't have 2 inch to 1 inch reducers, so I had to get a 2 inch to 1.5 inch and then a 1.5 inch to 1 inch. Super. Anyway, here's a pic comparing the reducer as it comes (on the left) and the reducer after I cleverly whittled the inner lip away.
If you look close and humor me you can hopefully see a bright white ring inside the fitting on the left. That's the annoying little lip that prevents the 1" pvc from sliding thru the damn thing. Luckily it was not match for my pocket knife...

 

Here are all the parts laid out before assemblage...
The pipe with 3/8 inch holes drilled in it (at the height that will be behind the 2" coupler), the end cap with a 1/4" hole drilled in the top for air flow, and the whittled 1.5" to 1" reducer and the 2" coupler with the 2" to 1.5" reducer already in it.

 

And finally the whole beast put together...now to figure out how high it needs to stand in the overflow box. Thanks for all the patience and support, guys!
