i have had this strange noice in my tank for quite awhile now and still to this day i have no idea what it could be
i have had my suspicions that it was a a crab i had spotted around the tank. but two days ago i removed it (gorilla crab). but yes now i am stuck with the same noice once again... previously people have said that it is a mantis shrimp but when i look into the tank i can see only my snails on the move...
could it be a pistol shrimp? or even a small mantis....

    Help!

whats the noise? popping/clicking? If so, probably a pistol shrimp. Could even be a hermit crawling along the glass tapping it. Look for little dugouts and burrows, then take a piece of table shrimp and set it outside of one of the burrows, should come out to grab it within a minute or two if it indeed exists in your tank.

Can you describe the noise? If it's clicking or popping, it could be either a mantis or a pistol shrimp. Do you have metal halides and only notice a popping/clicking noise after the lights go out? If so, it could just be your bulbs cooling down.

took me a year to see a hitch hiking mantis. so its possibly could be that. either in your rocks, or maybe within a burrow or cave it lives in. i havent dealt with pistols so cant comment there. just keep your eyes , and ears , lol, alert. ya never know what youll find.

Is it when the lights go off? If so, how long do you hear it?

O.K., Sometimes lights cooling down make clicking....whatever....noises. Now, does seem to indicate a shrimp or other creature. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't have a lair out of sight.

the lights are only t5's and the noise only started when i added more base and live rock. to be honest i have caught a pistol shrimp and i believed to have seen something that resembles a small or baby mantis shrimp
