This showed up on a piece of rock that I got. I have been searching high and low for a picture like it but have not been able to. It looks and acts similar to a zoa or paly polyp but it's tentacles are not around the edge of the skirt like all of the other pictures I've seen.

I briefly thought it might be some sort of anemone but I haven't been able to find a picture of any anemone that looks like this either. the tentacles are quite short, shorter than some zoas/palys.

I'm stumped at the moment. Anyone have links to similar pictures or have any clue what this is?

The pictures are not as clear as I would like, it's on the side of a large piece of rock and is quite hard to get a clear picture of it, hopefully it's enough.

    Thanks!

There is a piece of mysis shrimp in this picture that I was trying to feed it, it does seem to react to it but it took so long to do anything with it, maybe it was too big, I never actually saw it eat it.

Can you/have you made it close to see what it looks like? Wondering if it has a skeleton or if it's a polyp. Or, anemone. Kinda hard to tell with the pic. How did you take the pic? Flash/no flash/no zoom/lotsa zoom etc.?

    Thanks for taking a look.

I took the pics different ways trying to figure out how best to get a shot of it, I tried on a tripod, handheld, always no flash just under the lights, tried with the pumps off, all macro shots. It's high up on the rock so I think the lights are washing out some of the detail.
I'm not the best photographer, who would have known that getting into reef tanks would require photography skills?

It's definitely soft like a zoanthid and it's short tentacles will wave in the current and it will grab at food when I get it up close.
It retracts into itself at night but does not close up entirely like a zoa.

If it is a majano it's not like anything I've ever seen, I've done google image searches, searched other sites, other forums (oops, is that allowed?) and all the majano anemones I've seen all have much longer tentacles than this guy. Maybe it's just a small one?

I was beginning to suspect it was an anemone though. Anyone happen to have a photo ID by chance? I'd love to actually see a picture of someone else with this sort of creature, then again if it is a majano how many people take pictures of their pests? Kind of like taking a picture of your roach infested house I guess.

I kind of grew to like it so I'm still holding out hope that it isn't a pest.
