dump the quart into the 5 gallons. more is better. run the skimmer in clean water before you put it into your sump. i actually like magi-klean better but every one has vinegar. some even prefer it.
hum thats not going to smell good. maybe in the garage?

 

After you get it all cleaned up and in your sump leave the top off for a couple of days while its breaking in. That way if it overfills it will go back into your skimmer section and not hurt your sg level. While you are tweaking the skimmer as long as the skimmate is clear you can let it run back into your sump until the color starts to darken. By then you will just back it off a bit to get darker skimmate which should fill the cup once a week or so. If it's filling your cup sooner you will need to adjust it back. HTH

 

I would hook the skimmer up on a Friday so you can keep an eye on it over the weekend and once it breaks in you will be home to readjust it as needed.
