This thread has inspired me to add a little voltage to my system. It should keep my niece and nephew from sticking there filthy fingers in there. jk

Tom has had stray voltage twice in his systems and both times he called me for my multimeter to test. Both time I just used my finger. He is just a wee little guy and it didn't kill him.

On a serious note, its a good idea to have GFI outlets or breakers AND a grounding probe.

The last time Tom called the current was from a wet power strip on the ground, and after he unpluged his grounding probe he stopped getting shocked. The current was traveling from the strip through the wet carpet, up through him, into his tank and the completing the circuit via the probe. How weird is that?

LMAO that's funny (but very true). My uncle tried that once. He had to get kicked off the tank. He was changing the halide bulb with his pinky in the tank and touched the metal part. Not good.

I meant directions for others on how too use the multimeter LOL.

I've seen people put one probe in the outlet on the neutral side and the other in the water to test for voltage. Is that the correct method.

With the voltmeter, one probe in the GROUND of the wall outlet:

The other probe in the tank. Of course, you'll need to select the appropriate setting/range on the voltmeter or DMM you're using.
