I bought a piece of LR from my fish store about two months ago and in the las 3 weeks I found a coral growing on it. It looks like Rhodactis sp like this one Saltwater Aquarium Corals for Marine Reef Aquariums: Green Mushroom Coral

or maybe its an Actinodiscus sp. The point is that I have no idea what it is and I have not yet gotten into keeping corals and stuff like that. It is living in my new arrival tank with several fish in it. Its current PAR value is only 20 where it is located as the tank only has a single actinic bulb. I am wondering if that is enough light to keep it alive. I jus changed the bulb a few days ago to a 50/50 and the PAR where the coral was went up to 26 and the damn thing shriveled up so I replaced the bulb with another actinic and it seems happy now.

Can someone explain what "happy" should look like so I know whether mine is? Also is the light sufficient? I was going to put it in my coral tank but now I don't think I will if the light will be too much.

Finally, should I add supplements? I have not been adding anything and it hasn't died for the past month (which I assume is good).

    15ppm Nitrates
    1.025 Salinity
    Ammonia and Nitrite 0ppm

P.S. Sorry for the stupid questions I'm new.

i know I tried to take one with the camera on my phone and it looks like either a brown blob (with the flash) or a green blob (without the flash). And when I looked at everyone else's pictures......

But it does look just like the one in from the fosters and smith website. The only reason I say the other is the par values for the two corals, which I found on another site, were 79 for the Green Mushroom and 25 for the Actinodiscus sp so I was assuming that the Green mushroom wouldn't survive for a month in crappy water and really low light.

Im not sure, its hard to go by what something "looks" like. i'm no professional, but if you snapped a picture of it i know plenty of people on this forum would know exactly what it is. Everyone one on here will tell you the same. just try your best. otherwise we could be talking about something completely different then what it might really be.

If there was a rock with nothing on it under your original light and then something began to grow and continued to grow, the conditions were good enough for that something to survive. Mushrooms do not need any supplements other than what they get from regular water changes with quality salt mixes.
Any picture would be a huge help to positive ID and then we can help you better :).

I don't think the 50/50 bulb was too much light, but the change in lighting was too sudden. U will need to slowly acclimatise the coral to more light. it wont need much though, if it is a mushroom.

Agreed. Most shrooms are very hardy and easy to care for.
