So, thinking about sticking ne of those big submarine ornaments in with the live rock in my new set up.

Are these ornaments salt water safe ?

I know they are usually put into freshwater tanks, but have never seen one in a marine tank.

Can you post a pic? Do you know what it's made of?

Typically, aquarium ornaments are safe. One of the main reasons you don't see them in marine tanks is because most folks prefer their setup to look "natural". With being non-porous, they also won't hold much nitrifying bacteria.

I certainly understand, I have always liked having corals etc in the tank, but this tank is fowlr so I need something as a centre piece. I really did want some stoney corals, but I am told that my angel will devour them, and to be honest that's not what I wanted.

They also have coral inserts, basically fake coral that looks good in a FOWLR. Just another option.

I have a few "freshwater" ornaments (ship, barrel, light house) in my 10 gal HT for the fish to hide in. They are perfectly safe for marine use. As mentioned, most prefer LR for the natural look, but I think this would be appropriate in a FOWLR for the reasons you mentioned. Basically it is all up to what you (and/or your SO!) likes :)

LoL, this tank is only 350 on the display tank, the big tank is going into work, if I ever hear back from the engineer about the floor loading.
