Ok, how does this look for a sump? The refugium is a separate tank. This is a 29G tank (30x12x18h). I'm thinking of having the overflow from the tank drain into the left back chamber, where it will go through mechanical filtration. Then water will travel under the glass to the left front chamber where it will go through chemipure elite and live rock. Then it will spill over into my skimmer section, and finally through bubble trap and into return section. Any thoughts?

Keep the media you use in mesh bags so it is easier to remove and clean. (I mean the LR) Just make your bubble traps an inch wide. So 2 inches. If you have the room go 3". The wider they are, the slower the flow and the more effective they are. Too skinny and the bubbles will just be swept through.

Set your skimmer section baffle where your skimmer needs to be. 7-9 inches is common for most skimmers. If you error, error on the side of deeper. You can always raise your skimmer, but you can't lower it.

awesome. thanks for the feedback. Yes, I have room to go 3" since my refugium is an external tank.

thanks again. Now I can go get my glass cut.

ok, so here's the final drawing, with everything measured for fitment.

The inside height of the glass is 17 3/4"

The water enters the back left, flows through mechanical filters, and under the glass (1" gap, 5" wide) to the front left section.

Front left section has chemical filters, and then water enters the skimmer section, flowing over the glass. The height of the pane before the skimmer section is 15" tall.

The first bubble trap is 15" tall. I will be raising the skimmer to a proper height.

The bubble traps are 1.5" apart, with a 1.5" space under the middle one.

The final bubble trap is 10" tall. 5" difference from the first bubble trap.

    Does that look/sounds ok?

Looks like a winner. Now you will have to get it fired up and check that you have enough room when the pump shuts off. The only reserve space you will have is on top of the 15 inches and where ever you decide to run your return section.

Looks good, my only sugestion would be to drop your heights from 15" to 12" to allow plenty of room for error during any power outage or maintenance mishaps :)

I think I'll be good as far as overflow. It's a 29G tank and the display is 65G. I will be installing an inline check valve right at the pump, and I also have the siphon break hole in the return plumbing. I will also be putting shutoffs at both points connected to the tank for any kind of maintenance.
