I'm looking to substitute something for a carpet anemone. Basically I want something with the same large size and look as a carpet nem, but has a lower price tag and is less likely to eat my fish and is a little more hardy.

    For example: giant cup mushroom.

    Is there anything else?

My suggestion would be a toadstool. They can have a hefty price on them for the size, but if your willing to wait for it to grow out then that would be your best bet.

Hairy mushrooms will look like one when they massivly spread out and grow.

Are you looking for a clownfish host? I ask because, the hairy mushroom, while a good choice, will eat clownfish and clownfish may try to host in them. If not they are a good choice, I have some in my old 75g system that are probably 11" in diameter when fully open. They are pretty colorful too actually. My maroon goldstripe tried hosting in one and it kept trying to eat him. Luckily he was big enough he could force his way out (the mushroom was only 4ish" at the time -now it probably could). So, I got an LTA and the clownfish switched. Now 9 or so years latter they are all together in the same tank. So, as long as the cown is hosting in something else, it's probably ok.

    That carpet Lobo is cool.

Still for smaller price tag a toadstool is a good choice if you get a smaller one and wait for it to grow out (it will even get the undulated look of a carpet nem.

I'm not looking for a host, but yes I do have clownfish and there is no telling what they might take to. So i guess no giant cup or large hairy shroom.

    Steve:
I like the look of the carpet lobo. I remember reading your thread when you purchased it a couple of months back, but I couldn't remember the name of it. I looked into it and can only find one available, but the price is upwards of $100. I'm going to keep searching for it.

Right now I guess a toadstool is the way to go.
