Just wanted to know everybodys opinions on adding substrate to the bottom of a sump: mainly to increase surface area for bacteria and to trap other minor bits of detritus thus allowing pods to thrive. Already noticed a good number ofpods on my barebottom acrylic sump just with a small amount of silt. Thoughts and opinions?

If you can do it in an area that it wont get sucked into skimmer or return pump then i dont see why not. While your at it you may as well get a cheap light and throw some chaeto in there too.

If you're talking just sump,I wouldn't put anything in there as it would take up space that water could occupy and would be more "stuff" the return pump could suck up.If you're talking fuge then I have a dsb in mine with worms and no telling how many amphipods in the with a few different macroalgaes, don't have any expierence with the muds. The sump is more for water volume and equipment.I do have a small section where the water discharges to the sump from the overflow in the corner(about 4" x 4") filled with live rock rubble but it's mainly to break the microbubbles up.
