Here is an artical that is quite extensive and only for those who truly seek to understand contamination of aquariums and ways to avoid and address them. It is thorough and can get "deep" and needs a good study on your behalf but well worth the study.

One thing that I didn't notice in the article is the habit that some aquarists neglect to follow, and that is using aquarium safe gloves. Our bodies have natural oils that get released into the tank when we stick our arms and hands in during water changes, cleanings, object removal etc. Couple with the natural oils we carry, the skin moisturizers, lotions, and what other substances that may settle on our skin, the tank can get contaminated very fast. I thought more about that when I visited Hawaii during the summer. I went snorkle diving and did not wear sunblock to prevent further contamination of the reef. The reef was in pretty sad shape and had very little coral life, both at Shark Cove and Hanauma Bay, due to the large amounts of sun block that is released into the water. The same can happen in our tanks if we don't exercize simple precaution.
