I have heard people say you can put the sand in pantyhose and run ro/di water through it. I used a thin sock because I couldn't force myself to buy pantyhose. It's a time consuming process though.

I use a large bucket, and only put a couple of handfulls in at a time
then run the tap gently, strirring the sand with my hand to release fine particles
which run off down the sink as the bucket overflows
once the water seems to be clear, I stir the sand again just to be certain
and then repeat until all the sand is rinsed in this manner

you do not actually need to rinse the sand , and some would say that rinsing the sand denies you all those fine partlicles that would eventually host a lot of bacteria

but I still prefer to rinse mine, as it helps to avoid the couple of days cloudiness you get with a new set up and unrinsed sand

I just put it in a bucket and let water run over the sides while storing the sand until clear.

I think I can deal with a few days of cloudy opposed to twelve hours hunched over in my tub spilling sand everywhere lol. Just didn't know if there where any other serious negatives I should worry about if I didn't rinse
