Hi all. I am finally getting around to ditching the canister "filter" (right, like you filter out ANYTHING!) and adding a real sump. My LFS suggested the below setup. The problem is, I know nothing about sumps, so I'd like your opinion on the setup, parts, and prices he's suggested.

    My tank setup:
    - Fluval Osaka 320 (85 gallons)
    - Cabinet Dimensions = 14" wide, 23" tall, 17" deep (but if i cut the back wall out, which is not supporting any weight; it's just decorative, I can get another 3+ inches in depth)
    - Currently running the Fluval 405 Canister & a Remora Aqua C with baffle box
    - Currently have crazy high nitrates :-[

The LFS's solution to all my sump'ing needs:
    - Aqueon ProFlex Model 1 21x11x18 ($200)
    - Mag Drive 5 500gph ($120)
    - Eshopps PF-300 Overflow Box w/ Aqua Lifter Pump 600 ($200)
    - Wye fisher check valve ($75)
    - Ball valve ($10)

    My thoughts so far:
    - I can get this cheaper through 3reef sponsors.
    - The Mag Drive 5 is rated for 200gph more than the overflow box, but if I use the Maxijet 1200 from my AquaC Remora, they are matched and that's one less thing to buy.
    - I have no idea what an Aqua Lifter Pump 600 is.

    Any advice?

The problem with a ProFlex sump is skimmer and fuge space. Probably why your LFS doesn't have a skimmer listed.

Maxi Jet does not have the same head pressure as a Mag. Of those two, I'd go with the Mag, but there are quieter pumps.

You don't need a check valve, loose that. Your sump should be able to handle all of the excess water when the power is shut off.

Get a Glass Holes overflow box.

You would be much better off using a whatever size tank will fit under your stand, and making your own sump/fuge. It will save you enough money to get a good skimmer, and have a MUCH better performing system.

That explains why he suggested either the eshopps or the ProFlex. It seems like, based on what I've read online, that the Eshopps Reef Sump RS-75 (18x10x16) has footprint for a skimmer.

I've looked into finding a tank that would fit in the stand, but I feel like everything I read online is contradicting about where to place the baffles, etc. Can you suggest a site that would guide me on the proper setup?

I agree with the whole assessment.

One thing to remember on return pumps is that the rate output is with 0 head, also known as flow resistance from plumbing plus the resistance from gravity as the water is pumped upwards.

I was checking out Glass Hole, but it seems like I need to have a drilled tank (or drill my own); unfortunately, that's not an option at this point.

    Any other suggestions?

You can get a PVC check valve at home cheapo for like $8 if you are really worried about siphoning. But as mentioned, you should build your system so that your sump can hold all of the excess water if you lose power or your return pump goes.

The aqualifter is so that if your siphon breaks, it will restart and prevent your display from over filling.
