I've read alot about the 1000SSS and I've heard and seen pics of good results in 6-7".

But Octopus says that they do best in 8-10"

    hope this helps.

I have read the same thing. The baffles in my sump are 8" tall and I really don't want to make a stand for the skimmer. i need a skimmer for the frag tank, so i figured I would upgrade the skimmer on my 75 and move the SWC 160 cone to the frag tank.

Cool Idea. Post some pics when you get it going. I'm not looking into getting this skimmer anymore, but I'm curious... lol::)

The manuals do say 8-10", but mine works best in 6-7 as well.

Typically, the manual gives you water that is too deep. Its a precautionary step on the part of the manufacturer. It leaves you some leeway in both directions in case it isn't optimal for your setup so you can adjust the height. With that said, 6-7 also seems to be about right when I was testing those two skimmers.
