Right after I injured my eye, I sold a lot of my equipment and tanks. One of the items I sold was a very large sump and dolphin pump that I purchased as brand new and never installed. This sale occured on Oct 24 of last year. The sump had a small crack on the top somehow when we were transferring it, however it did not effect integrity......was where water would never touch. We were up front with the buyer and he was fine with it. He told me that he was going to install the pump and sump that same day!

Several days ago, he sent me an IM (did not come through here.......private local facebook message) that supposedly the pump had no shaft seal and is demanding his money back.

I explained to him that it was sold 6 months ago, and had he notified me at the time that the sale occured or even a month or so after I would have no issue. However 6 months later it is kind of suspicous. He posted me a picture of the pump and IMO it has been used and he broke it. I dont think i should have to pay him back........but I wanted to see what others say. He is already harrasing me and I suspect he is going to post very negative things about me on my local reef club page (as this is the type of guy that he is). Am I right to not pay him?

You are absolutely right not to pay him. There is no way I would give the guy his money back and I'm sure if you went onto that local site and explained your side up front, most people would understand.

Used products are sold "As is" the only guarantee I give out when selling anything used, is that it was currently working and in good working condition... if anythings I have ever sold breaks on the new owner, then it's the new owners problem.

Very simple: It was working fine for 6 months after you sold it. You did not sell a broken product and the cosmetics or scratches it had were brought to the buyer's attention before committing to buy.

Tell him you're sorry that happened to him. There's always a risk that comes with buying used items.

Heck no, the guy is just looking for a free hand out. After 6 months, I wouldn't even entertain it.

Yea I would tell him he is SOL......6 months later and he wants his money back? Not gonna happen.

I would post on the other boards before he gets to first and let everyone know what is really going on.

I agree with everyone. That guy is SOL. 6 months? I couldn't imagine contacting someone 6 months after buying used equipment and trying to get $ back. As stated earlier used equipment is sold as is. If he wanted a warranty he should have bought new. You're probably not he first person he's tried this with.

thanks all........that was my opinion, just wanted to make sure. I simply replied that again, the sale was over 6 months ago. If he would have contacted me a month or 2 after the purchase i would have enterained it. I am not going to respond on facebook until after he posts. The people who I care about on there know me and know i would never do something like this. The forum that this is on, is one that honestly most of the serious reefers have left that site simply because a select group of people are just bullys and harrasing everyone.......using profanity (throwing out the f bomb just as a post) and making fun of people. They finally got mods after a thread (that he did) went REALLY bad. I got off the forum (he had my facebook account) and had to get back on recently just to monitor him going off on me.

    Here's what you do...
Tell him that there is a option to buy a 1 year warranty from the date of sale for a extra 200 dollars. Then you will gladly get him a BRAND NEW pump.
    :)
Agree with the others...hes sol and you shouldnt feel bad about it at all. Its part of the risk of buying used...some peoole dont get that.

You could always block him so he can't post on your Timeline at all where your friends can see. Reporting any harassment as well is optional. :)
