Avoid HOT overlfows! Go with a standpipe! Or drill the back of your tank. Do not use tempered glass tanks. [cannot drill them :)]

Is it possible to go with a standpipe without drilling the tank?? If a tank can't be drilled, what other choice do you have besides a HOT overflow??

Today 06:59 AMZ-IceThe only way this will work is if you are not using an ATO. AND you will need to keep an extra pump on hand because every few days when your overflow slows down you will burn out your main pump.

Oops!! You are right.. I forgot about the ATO...

Thanks for the input all :) Its not going to have an ATO...and if it does, it will include no floatswitches, just a lift-pump on a 5g bucket on a switch (choose on/off and watch)
BUT, now I dont really have to toy with that idea...

    Hey Tangster,
Do you have access to good glass cutting? I figure use ____(insert product here) that will hopefully loosen up the sealant...replace the back glass and reseal...and plumb :p

    ^Easy as that right ;)

The real question though....Will I void my warranty

I would invest in an ATO. My 55 gal tank will evaporate ~5-6 gallons a week. If you do not have an ATO you will not be able to leave your house on any kinda trip. If you are not planning on leaving your house then overflow will work. They both will keep you busy throughout the week. :) You are on the right track. I heard of people buying a tank and breakout one side or the bottom and replace it with a piece you can drill. (I would drill before gluing in.) I forget the size of your tank. But if you knock out the back, and your tank is 50 gal or larger you should probably drill 3 holes. 2 for output and 1 for input. [You can always have your input go over the top.] Most glass places will drill a hold for you. But most will not in/on a tank. If you knock out the bottom or back...take the glass in to them before you place it in the tank.

    Hello Dan,

No that back glass is not tempered, however, we do not recommend drilling the tank. If you have anymore questions please feel free to contact us at 1-800-255-4527.
