I'm trying to setup my old 30 gallon into a sump for my 90 gallon reef, I planned on getting the Eshopps 800 GPH overflow. However, I can't seem to find much information on how powerful the return pump should be. It will be pumping up four and a half feet, not sure how much this effects the results. Any input would be nice, I might just be over complicating this.

The amount if flow after head pressure will change from pump to pump, but I would look for one that's does between 600 and 800 gph after the head pressure.

As a point of reference...maybe. On my 110g I have a 30g sump with a mag 9.5 return pump. It works perfectly. It goes horizontal 3.5ft and goes vertical 3ft with a ball valve.

Mag 9 would be a good match for that system. Or the mid-sized Ehiem pump would also do well.

    Is the pump quiet?

Yes it is quiet. I do hear that mags are powerhogs and may create heat but I am happy with it. My next pump was a triton, lfs had an amazing sale on them. I hear an eheim are great. Just a little more pricey. Sicce are great too and definitely cost more.

    Did I drop enough names?

I have a Mag 7 on my 55 gal with a 29 g sump. It is louder than I'd like it to be, but a strong pump indeed. I would suggest getting the next size up of the eshopps pf-800. It has the 2 bulk head drains. I have the pf-800 and expected more suction. just my .02

    I've decided to go with

Lifegard Aquatics Quiet One Aquarium Pump 4000 (Lifegard Aquatics Quiet One Aquarium Pump)

Do you think I would be okay with the eshoppes 1000? They're actually cheaper than the 800's on amazon right now haha.
