I am just starting up a 40g breeder with 30g sump, i wont have enough room in the sump for a skimmer as it will be a sump/fuge, So i will be hanging the sump off one end of the 30g. right now I have a Red Sea Prizm pro (100g rating.... pfft) on my current 25g. i dont think this will do on the new set up. anybody know any good HOB skimmers at a half decent price?

Sump design pic 2 posts down.

I don't get it... a 30g sump/fuge is plenty big enough for any skimmer you want for that size.

Ya.. a lot. The fuge only needs to be say 10" and you do not need a bubble trap, just a partition. The return section only needs to be as wide as the return pump. Make the skimmer section big enough to fit the skimmer. Make your bubble traps 3" total... 1.5" apart. A sWC 160 cone which is more than you need is only 9x7. You do not need an inlet part. Just drain the display tank into the skimmer section. Leave the return section what ever room is left over.

The return section is where I will notice my evap, correct? so I made it big enough so I wouldn't have to be topping off everyday or 2.

Regardless of how much you notice in the return section you should be topping off every day. It still swings salinity and the more stable you keep things the better they will be. One of the big reasons for a sump is for a ATO.

Yes you will notice it in the return section... but mine was 7" for 110 actual gallons in a 90g tank/60g sump and I could easily go a day. And I had a fan on my setup.

What dimensions do you think I should have my fuge and everything?

and you said I don't need a bubble trap after the fuge? won't I get micro bubbles from the water dumping into the fuge?

Sorry for asking so many questions, This will be my first sump setup.

You don't get micro bubbles form a fugr, you get them from skimmers.

you want your fuge as big as you can make it, but you only have so much room. Making room for the skimmer is the most impeortant...return is what ever it is, and fuge is secondary as big as you have room for.
