I know there are a few forums about this issue but I can't find the answer I'm looking for.

The drain line from my overflow box flowing down into my sump is extremely loud. Sounds like constant rushing water. Its in my living room and is driving me mad. I'm wondering what would work better to silence it.. Should I run pvc from my bulkead to get the pipe underwater or will this make more noise? Should I get a shorter hose running from the overflow? Should I stick some filter foam at the opening of the pipe to quiet it down? Which will work best.

I hd a very similar situation. What are you using now??

I had to go through about 6 different configurations to find something suitable as my tank is in thrnliving room too. I ended up doing away with PVC and the emergency shut off etc. I have a soft flex hose (looks like a vacuum cleaner hose kinda) which came with my eshopps sump. It comes down out of my bulkhead then makes a U so that the water exits the line vertically upward just below the water line.

This way there is no 45 or 90 degree angles that can cause a lot of noise. It's not "perfect" but it works... And I can watch a movie without the volume 3/4 of the way up.

I also encountered the same thing recently when setting up my 90g. I used 1' 5/8" vinyl tubing slid over the barbed bulkhead so that it is releasing the water apx 5 inches under the water line into my filter sock. Some people find that by doing this they have a ton of salt creep but I think because of the filter sock I do not have this problem.

i'm also using the i guess you would call "pool hose" that came with the sump clamped to the peice of pvc i glued into the bulkeads. Its four feet long and loops. Last night i placed a peice of filter foam between the sock and the drain line and it helps a little, but now my overflow is very loud.

heres a pic. Sorry its sideways.

If the tank is reef ready raise the stand pipe up, for the sump use tubing on the inside of the bulkhead to make it release incoming water below the surface

if that flex line is doing a loop like it looks like it is in the picture - that will seriously impede good flow.

Cut out the slack so the drain from the overflow goes right down to the sump's filter sock at a direct shot with minimal kinks and bends.

Thanks alot for that link dowtish! This would go inside of my overflow box instead of the little tube they sent me with the box?

anyway, i was think i should cut some of the flex hose (pool hose) because it is 4 feet long i really only need a foot and half im just worried that it will leak after i cut it. The ends have like slots so pvc pipe can slip right into them then i also clamped them.

Yes, as long as you get the right size pvc this will fit into your overflow, and you should be very happy with the results.
While you are picking up the pvc, just get some braided flex hose and cut it to the right length and use the same clamps you have. You won't have any leaks.;D
