    It still requires cleaning the sponge, periodic inspections and maintenance. Even some algae or flake food can plug it. Its a false sense of security.
    Drilled holes require cleaning and maintenance and can and will still fail period. There is no way to get around it, the air gap is the only proven method.

    I drilled 3 1/4" holes in the U of the return and it always gets enough air to break the siphon.
