I'm dealing with the hassles of cleaning the filter foam - used to limit the micro bubbles from the sump/skimmer - on a every few days basis. It's become the means of filtration rather than just limiting bubbles. I purchased 2 socks at a local store which deemed useless. They were some cheap $.50 socks that I filled with carbon and attached to the pvc dumping into the sump. The only thing it proved to accomplish was to decrease the gravity feed to a screeching halt.

What's the best way to use and mount a filter sock? Secondly, which do you suggest? It seems the socks with plastic openings work the best. Link where you purchased yours from. Thanks.

I tried placing a filter sock by attaching it directly to the pvc dump as well and had the same results as you. I ended up buying the sump filter sock inlet assembly from foster smith and it works great so far.

Maybe you could post some pics of your sump/filter setup? Depending on your setup it might be better to go with pads instead of socks as you can get a lot more surface area to flow across which will do less to hamper your gravity flow.
