you may want to consider doing a silicone job on the tank itself if its been sitting for a real long time.

plus that gives me the added benefit of what i was talking about above... i'll have to dig out my documentation again for that old thing. Actually, it just dawned on my that it may not be 'rated' high enough for my tank anymore. :( yuck that means i might need a new skimmer... oy.

yeah, i'm seriously considering ripping it all out and starting from scratch... surprisingly, it actually is looking pretty good but it still kinda scares me. I'll def do a good leak test on it for sure.

you need to determine which skimmer your going to use, it will dictate how high the skimmer section baffle will need to be to set the water height.
You can make the baffle higher and then set the skimmer up on a platform to allow you to create that extra back siphon capacity you mentioned.

Here's my hopefuly final diagram. I increased the height of the skimmer side. Tossed the Fuge side BT. Threw the .5'' over to the skimmer side in the event that i can buy a bigger skimmer someday (hopefully it'll fit). Added the valve. And increased the middle baffle to 2'' above the bottom. Now i just gotta find a hw store that sells 1/8'' glass (preferably cut to size).

I think your there. suggestion on the media box, MMcDonald used this in his sump build. He took one of those square acrylic spaghetti containers, drilled a bunch of holes in the sides and glued it into the corner of the skimmer section.
