Sump/fuge opinion

How about this idea--I'll most likely be dealing with limited space with a 10g sump and making three sections out of it. If I upgrade my skimmer down the road (using a Aqualife 115 right now, which is doing a nice job and would fit in my current design), couldn't I just use a hangon skimmer on the side of the sump? It would still get water from the first section of the sump because the pump for it would be there and it would also return it to the first section--does this make sense?
