Sump? I want to remove my socks!!

200 micro is the way to go. i keep 5 on hand. and i wash the in the washing machine with a lil bleach and 2 quick rinse cycles. it will filter like new. hand washing gives you 2 to 3 day before it clogs again. i got the same protein skimmer how do you like it?

 

someone told me they put the sock on but cut the bottom out to cut down on sound and salt creep and bubbles. i never tried it personally. but sounds like it could work.
im over stocked with fish so i probably wont be able to go sockless

 

So are you saying without the socks the tank is cleaner or dirtier? I change mine once a week. I wanted to remove it as well but afraid of the extra nutrients going back in the tank.

 

Without the socks on (duel overflow) I have not noticed a very big difference if the overall tank cleanliness as of almost 48 hours. I have done all my tests and everything checks out. I can say this the water does not look as good as it did with the socks on but im weighing out what I like more right now. I really do wish that they did make something else to put instead of a sock, that some sort of media could be placed in and wasnt so hard to get in and out. My sump/refuge is only 18 inches wide, but long. Who knows, maybe I can think something up that will change the hobby!! Ok back to earth...Honestly if anyone has any good ideas on what a sock could be replaced with please let me know. And by the way I will try the wash machine( I honestly have been lazy and scared to wash so i hand washed them). Thanks all!!

 

My thought on this as well is that your skimmer/UV,etc should take care of the added nutrients to your tank. But its the particulates that float thru the tank that can also become bothersome. So much to weigh out with this hobby but I love it!

 

I also run a 200 micron sock. I'd say I have to swap it for a clean one every 10-14 days. I have a light bio-load so I'm sure I'll have to clean more often with a larger bio-load but like the crystal clear h2o. I also keep 4 or 5 on hand.

I get mine from BRS for $4.80 when I get 5 at a time.

Anybody get them cheaper? Where from? I get the 4" ring x 14"

Yah! I haven't been able to find them cheaper than this. I love BRS, get a lot of my fishy stuff from them!! ;D
