reef sparky pretty much nailed it, and the sponge that was in yer baffles was restricting yer water flow and thatsa why yer return chamber was emptying quick now the water has a much more free run threw yer sump and into the return chamber, in a sence the filter pad was working in the same way as a tap the more dence the material the less water can go threw it at once,

u wont see the water lvl change in yer tank or really even yer sump exept the evaprated water in the return because the water in yer sump in the fuge area will always have to go over the baffles so the water lvl in there will be the same <unless something is restriting it> as fer yer display its the same thing when the water is at the level it will over flow and of course the return pump is what sets the speed of that by constantly tryin to fill the tank

hope this helped a lil more

OK, I'm with you all on that part now.
So here it is 10 hours later with the filter pad removed, and the line has not moved.

Whereas , the previos two days, I was adding 2 cups of water every few hours and adjusting the valve.

So with filter = add water constanty
No filter pad = Do nothing

Umm, where was it going ?

    My head hurts...

    Cheers

before with that filter pad in when u added the water it was building up in yer fuge area because it couldnt get threw the filter pad quick enough
the water is still in yer system but the filter pad was slowing it down that much.
u dint have to add water before u just needed to remove the filter pad to let it get threw quick enough to keep yer return area full, that filter pad prolly restricted yer water flow by half getting threw the baffles and that is what made yer return empty out so quick
