can anyone help me with sump overflow noise? I have a HOB overflow with 3/4" flextube going down into my sump. I have removed my foam filter that was designed to be used with the unit. I always get the gurgling sound from the overflow unit and it's very annoying. I currently have two seachems bags in the overflow tray and it seems to help some but not completely. Thanks for the help in advance.

my overflow has a straw that sits on the bulkhead so that the gurgling noise is nulified

You'll get the gargle noise if there is back pressure against the over flow.
Are there any hard angles or restrictions from the overflow to your sump? Try to make it as straight down as possible.

i had the same problem even with the foam, this is what i did and it now has a very quite trickling noise now(kinda soothing like those mini fountains :))

take a piece of pvc pipe that will fit snug in the bottom of your overflow so it sticks up out about 4-5 inchs, then drill a hole into it one by one reinstalling it after each hole until you get the sound you are happy with. 2 holes going up it and 4 holes around the top got mine to the quiteness i wanted.

then i took the foam filter you are talking about and stuck it at the end of the drain tube which also made the enterance into the sump silent aswell.

Had the same problem. You need to increase the capacity of your HOB line to the sump. I had an HOB supposedly sized for my tank and increased it to a double (2) return lines and the gurgling is gone. If you dial back your return pump it will go away also but you are decreasing your water turnover rate then.

The gurgling noise, if it's what I am thinking (loud and like a toilet flushing) is because your return pump is pumping too fast and overloading the siphon on the overflow. Try dialing it down a bit and see if it helps.
But there will always be some noise with an overflow. Also, flex tubing is much louder than solid PVC.

Thanx for all your replies.....I think I'm going to go to PVC and maybe add a ball valve just to tweak the flow. I may also try the PVC extension tube into the bulkhead with multiple holes. Last night after I posted this thread I went home and changed the way my flextube dumps into my sump. I have a 90 PVC head that I have positioned just to the top of the water line where the water can flow out without restrictions and this has helped. You guys have given me some really good advice and I feel I can finally fix this and rest. THANX.....;D
