I have a 75 gallon tank set up for about 3 weeks now and I have this sump pump from a aquarium a couple years ago. It is a surge 3500 that is rated 660 GPH. Do you think I could use this like a power head to get better flow or would it be over kill. I just want to have good current but not to much. Please help.

my only concern would be exposed metals inside the pump. Aquarium pumps are made specifically with this in mind. I would err on the side of caution and not use it but that's just me. by the way, you need more than that 660 gph by far for a 75 gallon tank.

Some older sump pumps are oil filled, and do leak oil when hot.

So what kind of power heads would you recommend for a 75 gallon and how many.

I would recommend a couple of Koralias or that above mentioned maxijet pump and mod. Great wide flow, unlike most power heads which have a concentrated stream. DrsFosterSmith.com has the Koralias on sale.
