so i recently bought a new skimmer that operates in the sump, the skimmer i have now is not. i have a deep sand bed and some live rock rubble in my sump now. my question is can i just take all the sand out to prepare for the new skimmer or will this cause instability? maybe half now, half next week? any replys would be much appreciated

If you are going to remove the DSB then you should take the sump down and remove all of the sand. More damage will be done removing part of the dsb than all of it. Throw out all of the water in the sump left after removing the sand. Clean it up while your are at it also.
