rinse it in the saltwater you've pulled out or rinse them in the sink?

I don't always use a sock, but when I do, I drink DosXX.
    Oh, I mean...

When I use a sock, it gets clogged enough to overflow within a few days.

I only use one when I'm doing something that stirs extra sediment up.
    Usually don't run one.

You could research this very subject- lots of ways to skin this cat.
I soak in a bucket of tap water and bleach- about 1/2 cup/gallon.
then rinse with tap water and let it dry out.

    Some use the washing machine.

I've heard of using dechoorinated water to rinse, or using a snake oil product like Prime, etc- Overkill IMHO.

so I should probably grab a couple extra socks so that I can swap while I am cleaning these. I was worried about using tap water to rinse them, but I guess it doesn't really hurt them or bring anything bad in when you put them back.

I agree that they clog up too fast, I just use a nitrate absorbing filter floss between my bubble traps. I only use socks if I am manually removing algae and I remove after a few hours. I also have a very fine sock if this helps

I do what Todd does as well with the bleach and tap water and let it soak overnight. Then jus my good rinse with tap water and let them dry out till the following week. Had no issues at all doing that. I figure if you run the carbon insurance policy on your tank it will soak up whatever tap water left on the sock. Going to switch this weekend to mesh socks instead of felt and will update with results. those supposedly only need a good rinse and no bleach.

I throw mine in the washer with bleach. I think socks are great, spend the 2 minutes every two or three days and switch it out, that simple.

I wash out in tap water every two to three days or if overflowing. They definitely clear up the water with a felt type 100-200 micron sock. Don't use them if you don't clean it often enough. I have about 8-10 new ones and plan to just rinse out and put a bunch in washing machine every couple months.
