hi guys i'm new to this forum so bare with me

i currently have 5x2x2 which has been setup up for about 10 weeks now it cycled really well and i'm just taken my time . i have a 3 chambered sump (inlet)(refugium)(return). the quesstion i have got is do i need some kind of filter media or some people call it a sump sock, currently the water is just drained into the first chamber where the skimmer is. if i do need 1 where can i get 1 and how do they work. does the pipe have above or below the water level for the sock to work or is there another way any ideas on this matter would be great.

Socks work fine but you do need to remember to change them. I always like the return to be below the water line because it keeps the noise down quite a bit. I dont think the socks care if they are above or below water and I dont think it effects their performance. I only have one issue with filter socks. If a fish takes the ride down the drain line and ends up in a sock it is more than likely going to be battered to death. Without the sock it may be fine for days living in the sump.

Remember, clean or change them often.

I have used socks for about a year (200 micron) They are awsome-I own 2 and rotate them twice a week. Just rinse in sink, and then throw in washer with bleach only. Air dry and ready to go. I have seen no significant wear in a year. Here is a link for you to give you the idea.

    welcome to 3 reef Dave

as stated above filter socks on the end of the overflow helps to remove detrius/ sediment etc and prevents it sitting in you sump and contributing to your nitrate levels

routine cleaning and changing is required in order to benefit from their presence

The only thing I do differently is I dont rinse in the sink I just throw in the wash and let it go from there.
