I wanted to share my experience with you all in case it proves helpful to someone in a similar situation. I was having a problem with diatoms-- likely from overfeeding. It meant setting up a phosphate reactor. In the process, I decided to change my sump situation and the water flow. I had a separate pump in the sump for a chiller, protein skimmer and return. During the change-over, I removed the chiller pump and return pump... upgrading the return pump to a mag 18 from mag 10. It now pumps water from the sump after getting skimmed... to the phosphate reactor to the chiller... then back to the tank.

As a result... my 1/4HP oceanic chiller has NOT turned on once... that's right... not once in 48 hours. (unless during the time I was sleeping) I can tell you my tank temperature has maintained a steady cool, crisp 77 degrees in my 72 gallon tank. This despite MH and T5's burning bright for 8 hours!! Not to mention... it's way more efficient without all those pumps in the sump and guessing game as to where the water was going and the heat.

Lesson learned... get an upgraded pump whenever possible and avoid clutter, heat and hassle in the sump!

    Hope it helps!
