Got it. Thanks. one more thing where my inlet is going to be its just an open top on the sump.. whats the best way to introduce the input from the tank? should i just run my plumbing to the top of it and put a filter sock on the end and have it dump into sump? or should i have the plumbing go to the bottom of the sump so its not as loud when the water is entering into sump.

I plan on doing a combo of both. Im going to get a filter sock and run my inlet pvc thru it with holes drilled in it and the end left open. I dont know if i will go all the way to the bottom, maybe 3/4" away from it give or take.

That number may be more. As long as you get why a sump is a sump, then you can make it however you wanna really. type in sump on the google search bar on this forum and youll get like a billion results of members sumps and such. just make sure you take notes and tweek things however they best suit your set up and your intentions. you can just have a tank with no baffles with a skimmer and lr and filter media just shoved in there and call it a day (not recommended) and it may work for this guy, but not for that guy. get my drift.

Be creative, and have fun with it. I know i will lol.

Unless you are going for a minimal display tank and don't have enough LR... there is no need for it in the sump. It traps too much detritus. Keep it in the display tank.

Sorry to jump in here but I also have a H.O.T. canister filter. My stand is dixided into 3 chambers that are very thin so I have no room at all for a sump. I love the idea but it just won't work with what I have. My tank is only 46 gallons and the skimmer I plan on purchasing is rated for 150 gallons so my filtration needs should be covered. I have already been told to get rid of the canister filter but the thing was like 80 bucks and I doubt I can take it back. Is there any way for me to use this thing and it have any benefits? I was thinking of removing the filter media and filling the thing with smaller pieces of live rock. I will get rid of it if there are no benefits but it sucks to waste 80 bucks. I guess I should have did research before making the purchase!
