What are your guys thoughts on this? I have a 20 gallon tall I'm going to be swapping my current, extremely narrow sump out for. I need as much room as possible for pumps and I won't be implementing a fuge due to using bio pellets. I have an ATO to keep the water level stable for the skimmer and can add a pre-filter to my mag 9 to reduce micro bubbles. So I'm thinking just a open sump will give me what I need. Am I not thinking of something?

What is your plan to accommodate the return water from the tank? It will be moving quickly and will create a significant amount of micro bubbles. A prefilter on the return pump won't catch these.

Just micro bubbles. Baffles keep bubbles in the "inlet" chamber. Otherwise, I like my skimmer chamber to be baffled so the water height does not move at all. Depending on your ATO system, this may not be an issue.

I do have a ATO so I wouldn't think this would be much of an issue...

Don't most modern skimmers have their own anti-bubble mechanism built in?

I ran an open sump before with no issues. Also have a friend with one; he simply divided it with a large sponge to trap any bubbles.
