sump

so im going to be getting a sump soon. the tank is not drilled and i didnt really want to get one of the Hang on overflows. I was thinkin if i made some PVC out-take and in-take would that work. my idea is if i just use 2 corner pieces with a skrew on basket and then drill a small hole just under the waterline, so that if power goes out it catches air and then breaks siphon. Would this design work when the power came back on. Im not sure how it would make siphon again but let me know of some tircks you guys know about. thanks

 

rad,, I would suggest you use a overflow or sometimes called a weir to get the water from the main tank to the sump. You can buy one or make it yourself. Here is a link DIY Overflow Box, Drilling a tank can ruin your day, beleave me. This link explains how it works pretty plainly, good luck.

 

Yeah i would never drill a tank that wasnt drilled to begin with. not to mention its full of fish and corals lol. but did you understand what i was talkin about with the PVC?? When im thinkin about it's a hard thing to explain but its relying on siphon and will the water stay in the tupe after it catches air or will it all drain to the sump and leaving nothing but air in the sump??

 

siphons wont work with air in the line. its risky but there is a way to make an external overflow on a glass tank with livestock inside. in short: lower the water below the cut line, dremel the slots, make overflow box, let set.

 

wouldn't that break the glass though with all the water pressure in the tank. The tank itself is not tempered but i don't want to try without a backup plan. Its a hard thing to explain and in my head it will work lol. i just need a way have the water break when at a certain level and then regain siphon when the power is back on. ill see what i can do.

 

the bottom is more than likely tempered, not the sides. like i said its risky, you have to know how to work with glass.

 

ive cut glass before, but i dont trust myself enough lol. Yeah its a 65 gallon with temp. bottom and plate glass starphire sides. I think ill let it be and during tax time get my aftermarket overflow and plumb from there. its not my favorite option but thats what happens when you dont get it drilled right away lol. live and learn.

Easy to make . Might be worth checking out if you dont want to drill.
