Hello, I am setting up my first saltwater tank, up untill now it has been all freshwater. its 40 gallons, and is going to have fish, corals and invertabrates. I have a ten gallon tank I no longer need, and I am thinking about making it into a sump. But, I am wondering, would it be better to use it as a sump, or a quarantine tank?

it would be better as a quarantine tank. because unless you have a auto top off you would have to refill it every other day

I would make my own auto top off.

Good question. They're both important. If I had to have one, though, it would surely be a sump. I made a sump/refugium out of a 20G long. You can see it here, if you'd like.

    Good luck!!

I was thinking that a 10 gallon qt would be to small, so I think I will use it as a sump. Thanks for the help!

You should invest in a QT as well. They are absolutely necessary. And they do not cost much to put together. Just bare bones stuff. Tank, small HOB skimmer, heater, something for the fish to hide behind. I put mine together for about $60 I think, maybe less. John.

Ya, I know I need a QT tank as well. Would a good size be 20 gal?

I won't dispute they're great to have, and you'd be better off with one than without, but I wouldn't hasten to say they're "absolutely necessary."

I have never had one, and I've done modestly well thus far.

OK, maybe an overstatement......but they do come in very handy. Without one, I had to put a powder brown tang down. Ick got him. I had to take him out before my whole tank suffered. My next tang (the yellow tang......which I hear is extremely rare. OK another overstatement) came down with ick. This time I had a QT and cured the bugger. I was soooooo happy with me. I have used it three or four times since the powder brown incident. It is hmmmmmmm extremely useful. There that is better!!!!!!!! ;D John.
