I am in the process of getting materials together for a ten or 20 gallon sump for my 55g setup. I run an aqua c remora skimmer with a rio 1200 pump. Would it be possible to use a hang on skimmer in my sump?

Didn't know where to post this question in refugium or skimmers.

    Thanks.

as long as the water level is high enough in the sump to produce enough bubbles for skimmate

i have a BAK PAK and i was going to try it in a sump but it wouldn'twork as i needed the water level to be higher.

some skimmers are designed to go either way HOB or standing in sump

I was at a buddy of mines house today checking out his tank, and he had a back pack on his sump. As well as his normal skimmer. I couldn't tell what kind he had, but he didnt really have any crazy plumbing. I will ask him if he can email me some pics to post tomarro.

The Remora should work just fine. I would also stick with a 20g long. You can section off a part of it before you put it in (I did a 12"x12") for a future fuge. Silly-cone a length of acrylic and put some eggcrate on top. Presto.

I agree with the 20 long. Personally, I put mine in the sump in the case that it overflows, it will into the sump, not all over the floor. Just my .02. Good luck in either case!

Here's another question. I am shopping for sump parts and I noticed that my tank sits too close to the wall, 5 inches to be exact. I want to do the 20g long but I have taken some measurements and don't see it fitting in my 55g stand. The stand has two double doors. Should I just stick with e 10g? Is there an easy way to make the 20g fit?

See if you could fit two 10G tanks, then drill them and connect them. Take some pictures of your stand and give us some internal measurements, and measurements of the door way. It would be cool if you could fit 2- 10G tanks side by side. 1 for the skimmer, and one for the return pump. Then if there is room, elevate a 5.5G above the return for a refuge, then have it drain into the return tank.
I just drew this up real quick, it may work for you.

If you have the room to add the 5.5G above one of the 10s, then go for the refugium to. But you could always add that later. Get the sump up and running, then you can DIY a refuge if you have time. You, may even be able to fit a 5.5G horizontal, so it doesnt take up so much room. Also, you may want to elevate the skimmer tank just a little bit above the return tank. That way you can maximize your flow rate into the return.
